Honouring the Khalsa's Light: Guru Gobind Singh Ji's Birthday

Today, January 17, is Guru Gobind Singh Ji's birthday, which is observed as Prakash Parv by Sikhs all around the world. This day honours the life and teachings of the tenth and last human Guru of Sikhism, a warrior-saint who founded the Khalsa Panth and left behind a legacy of courage, equality, and selflessness among his adherents.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who was born in 1666 in Patna, India, took the spiritual throne at the young age of nine. During his early years, he faced great hardships, one of which being the murder of his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur, for his refusal to convert to Islam. In spite of these difficulties, Gobind Singh Ji became a formidable leader who embodied fortitude, discernment, and unflinching faith.

The establishment of the Khalsa Panth in 1699 was his most significant and revolutionary accomplishment. At Anandpur Sahib, he baptised a selected group of warriors and gave them the five Ks: kesh (unshorn hair), kangha (comb), kirpan (sword), kachh (pants) and kara (steel bracelet). The fundamental principles of Sikh identity are represented by these symbols, which stand for unity, discipline, defence, righteousness, and devotion.
